The Final TURNkey Meeting
On April 25-28, 2022, the final meeting of TURNkey was held in Orihuela, a small town in the province of Alicante, south-east of Spain. The event was organised by the University of Alicante (a TURNkey partner) and started with a two-day workshop “Jornadas Internacionales de Sensibilización frente al Riesgo Sismico“.
On April 25, the workshop was targeted for local stakeholders only (Municipality, Police, Civil Protection, Emergency Military Unit, etc.) and featured a series of Spanish-language presentations focusing mainly on topics related to seismic risk in Orihuela and surrounding areas, structural vulnerability, building damage assessment protocol, and emergency management after a seismic event. Among the speakers on this day were experts from the University of Alicante, the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Polytechnic University of Valencia as well as the Head of the of the Valencia Region Seismic Network and a representative of the Civil protection of Murcia region.
On the second day (April 26), the workshop focused exclusively on TURNkey and was held in English. In particular, the TURNkey partners involved in Operational Earthquake Forecasting (OEF), Earthquake Early Warning (EEW), and Rapid Response to Earthquake (RRE) outlined the research activities carried out throughout the project and the main achievements. In the same day, the main project outcome, i.e., the TURNkey platform, was presented to local and international stakeholders attending the event. Specifically, the presentation aimed to showcase the operation and the usability of the tool through the demonstration of the TURNkey platform in the municipality of Orihuela.
The presentation of the TURNkey platform continued in the morning of the following day (April 27), with the presentation of the final results from the Participatory Action Research (PAR) to show how the needs and requirements of the stakeholders have been taking into account in the development of the platform. Finally, the local stakeholders had the opportunity to ask practical questions about the possibility of installing the TURNkey platform in the Alicante area in an open session that concluded the workshop.
In total about 70 people (consortium partners representatives and stakeholders) attended the workshop. We had also the honour of welcoming in person Fumio Yamazaki from the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED, Japan), a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of TURNkey. The partners who could not attend the event in person joined the meeting virtually.
From April 27 afternoon onwards, the meeting was only dedicated to the TURNkey consortium. Partners attending the meeting physically or virtually were informed about the latest aspects related to management and final reporting of the project. Besides, further exploitation of TURNkey results and possible routes to market for the TURNkey platform were discussed. The consortium meeting was also attended by Alberto Pozza, the project officer from the European Commission (EC), and Philippe Quevauviller, Policy and Research Programming Officer at the EC, who presented to the consortium the Community for European Research and Innovation for Security (CERIS) and its scope and opportunities. Finally, the last General Assembly of the project was held to discuss the remaining open points before the end of the project at the end of May 2022.
In the morning of April 28, a final technical session was organized to discuss practical aspects of the installation of the scientific engine and the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of the platform in the different testbeds.
